Tucked away east of Melbourne Airport and Apollo Boulevard, west of South Magnolia Avenue and south of Sarno Road lies a twenty-two acre woodland that has escaped the frenzy of construction. <Google Map>
Representing the largest tract of undeveloped land in the heart of the city, this woodland is now available for purchase. The city of Melbourne has the opportunity to create a conservation area to provide recreation and education, promote clean air and water, and preserve this ecosystem for the Melbourne community.
On August 24, 2007, the City of Melbourne was deeded the 22 acre parcel of land directly west of S. Magnolia avenue and south of Laurie Street acquired by the St John's River Management District. This parcel is to be a part of the Indian River Lagoon Conservation project. The property is to be managed to maintain and purify water runoff before returning it to the Lagoon and is to include a shallow, five acre pond. It will include bicycle and walking trails. The project is time sensitive with a deadline to begin.
A project of this proportion can only succeed with your involvement. Contact your City Council Representatives to tell them that you support the creation of this critical portion o fthe Indian River Lagoon conersation system. The current acreage deeded to the city is just part of the ecosystem that stretchhes between Appllo Boulevard and magnolia Avenue. An additional 13 acres is needed to complete the project. You can go to the City of Melbourne website or you can contact the City Council Members at cityclerk@melbourneflorida.org and express your support for this important project. |
